Coach Barry Wolfson is the Foul Shot Doc. Trained in sports psychology and the methods that have enabled professional players, like Jameer Nelson of the Detroit Pistons and Trevor Ariza of the Los Angeles Lakers to improve performance and results for themselves and their teams, Coach Wolfson has helped youth, college, and professional teams and players at every level improve form and technique to reach peak performance, especially when it comes to free throw shooting.

He has 11 years coaching basketball at the college level (including NCAA tournament appearances) and 37+ years as a mental health counselor and has helped hundreds of athletes in a variety of sports improve and reach higher goals. Coach Wolfson combines his expertise both physically & mentally to help players optimize their talent, visualize their success, and score under pressure.

His approach is grounded in the fundamentals that good practice is driven by a positive mindset. When a player’s shot is off, using creative visualization, positive imagery, and progressive relaxation, The Foul Shot Doc™ can reset the player’s approach, both mentally and physically, so that each shot is a new shot…and a new shot is a good shot.

At age 4, Coach Wolfson learned to dribble under the guidance of St. John’s and New York Knicks coach Joe Lapchick. What began in childhood led to professional endeavors. Coach Wolfson served as Head Coach at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut and Upsala College and Raritan Valley College in New Jersey. He also served as a shooting consultant for Kean University’s Final Eight team. While at Quinnipiac, Coach Wolfson also ran the girls division of Calvin Murphy’s Basketball Camp.

Coach Wolfson is credited with taking Quinnipiac University Women’s Basketball team to a New England Collegiate Conference championship with a 24-2 regular season record. Under Coach Wolfson’s direction, the team ranked 4th nationally, and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament.

Following Barry’s time at Quinnipiac, he returned to New Jersey where his efforts re-established Upsala’s Women’s Basketball team, leading them to their best record ever with an average of 15 victories each season, an ECAC post-season appearance, national ranking, and a number of Women’s Intercollegiate Conference Championships, resulting in him receiving Coach of The Year honors from the New Jersey Nine Conference. Hubie Brown’s Knicks team practiced in the Upsala Gym at this time.

Coach Wolfson is also a trained counselor with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey and a Master of Science degree in Counseling from Upsala College. In addition to serving as director of a counseling center, Coach Wolfson regularly appears at area colleges as a guest lecturer in undergraduate and graduate studies, and served as a consultant to the State of New Jersey.

Coach Wolfson counsels individuals and organizations on issues of personal improvement, sports confidence, and business issues, all under the precept that perspective and mindset can impact behavioral change and enhance performance.

He is a member of the American Counseling Association, American Association of Counseling and Development, and the Association of Humanistic and Education Development.
